odd country

Despite the rapid increase of East Asian migrants to South Africa in recent years, their presence in the country is minuscule compared to other Western countries. Including Indians, they form 2.5% of the total South African population and an even smaller percentage if we look only at Chinese and Taiwanese migrants in the country.

South Africa is the only country in Africa that is home to three distinct communities of Chinese; the local Chinese, the Taiwanese and Hong Kong industrialists and the new wave of migrants from China. To date, approximately 350 000 Chinese and 6 000 Taiwanese migrants reside in South Africa.

This multimedia project explores the lives of multi-generational Chinese and Taiwanese migrants across South Africa and how language, culture, community and discrimination have come to shape their identities.
